Eastern Bhutan
Eastern Bhutan is markedly different from the west and central Bhutan in terms of development and lifestyle. The steepness of the region lends itself to some spectacular views, with rushing waterfalls and sheer drops. The towns are mostly built on the hillside instead of in the valleys, and the dominant language is Sharchop, unlike Dzongkha in the west.
Mongar
The journey from Bumthang to Mongar is one of the most beautiful in the Himalayas, crossing 3,800 meter high Thrumshingla pass. Mongar marks the beginning of eastern Bhutan, the largest town in the subtropical east.
Site to be seen in Mongar is the Mongar Dzong, one of the newest Dzongs, built only in 1953. However, the Dzong is built in the same architectural design and traditions that any other Dzongs are built. So, no drawing or nails have been used in building the Dzong. A visit to the Dzong would give any visitor an impression of how traditional Bhutanese architecture has continued to thrive through the centuries till present day.
Trashigang
Located approximately 3 hours drive from Mongar, Trashigang is said to be one of the oldest town in the east and is one of the largest districts in Bhutan. There are numbers of places to be seen in Trashigang. Trashing boasts a number of monasteries, temples, a weaving centre, school for the blind and disables and the Bhutan’s only degree college, Sherubtse College (the peak of learning).
Approximately 24 kilometres from Trashigang is the sacred temple of Gomphu Kora, popularly know as Gom Kora. The temple is revered as one of the sacred sites in eastern Bhutan. It is believed that Guru Rinpoche meditated here in order to subdue a demon that dwelt in a big rock.
Trashiyangtse
Trashiyangtse is a small pretty, quiet town. The people here are known for making wooden bowls and containers, which are said to be the best in Bhutan. Just below the town is the Chorten Kora, the only stupa to be built based on the stupa of Boudhanath in Nepal. It was built in 1740 by Lama Ngawang Loday. An hour’s walk from Chorten Kora is a village called Bomdeling, where the black neck cranes habitat in winter.
